Young Artist Feature: Nazneen Bhatia

Welcome back to another instalment of Aureus Academy’s Young Artist Features! Today, we're delighted to shine a light on Nazneen (17), who is taking voice lessons from Teacher Ilina at Aureus @ Forum.

We got to know Nazneen a little better after her spectacular performance.

1. How long have you been taking voice lessons?  

I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember. But I’ve been with Aureus for about eight years and have worked with Ms Ilina for over 3 – 4 years.  

2. What do you love about singing?  

I consider it one of the most personal art forms. When you sing, you’re really able to engage with your audience and connect with the people around you. If you love what you’re singing, you can pull out emotions from the audience and fill the room with emotion, which is my favourite thing about it.  

3. Do you perform often?  

Very often, yes. If it’s not performing with Aureus, I’m usually performing with school or outside of school. So, a week doesn’t usually go by without a lesson or a performance.  

4. What is your go-to song to perform?  

My go-to song is If I Ain’t Got You by Alicia Keys, which I don’t think any singer can say they haven’t sung. Otherwise, I enjoy putting my spin on Feeling Good by Nina Simone.  

5. What is your practice routine like?  

Having worked with Ms Ilina for several years, I’ve developed a repertoire of exercises and warmups that I can use before performances or on a daily basis to maintain my vocal agility. Furthermore, my frequent performances help me to maintain my skill and confidence.  

6. What advice would you have for other students who would like to master singing?  

Probably two main pieces of advice. The first is finding a teacher you resonate with who can foster your love of singing. I think Aureus is extremely helpful in this process as they are able to pair a student with a teacher that is most likely to inspire them and work closely with them.  

My second piece of advice is to do what you love. If there is a particular song or style that you really love to sing, then by all means, you should explore that avenue as much as possible. While I fully encourage exploring different genres and styles, it is always great to perform what you love most.
