Diligently tuning her acoustic guitar in the colourful and cozy living room, sits 13-year-old Vera Lim, our Aureus Young Artist this June. We had the opportunity to speak to her and ask some questions about fingerstyle guitar, getting started on YouTube and how her family, passion and determination has constantly inspired her on this musical learning journey that has come full circle with Aureus Academy, Singapore’s leading music school for children.
Recipients of the Aureus Young Artist of the Month are students who show outstanding progress and growth in technicality and musicality. They are recommended and handpicked by our Aureus teachers from everyday classes at Aureus Academy. When we feature them, we hope to be able to motivate and inspire other young artists with their stories.
All Thanks To Dad
The passion for the instrument was rekindled when Vera’s father, Daryl, nudged her along to try picking up the guitar again and when Vera did, she “discovered how much [she] missed playing [the guitar], the joy of making music and wanted to continue on that journey.” What began as an encouragement for a father-daughter home project has led Vera to rekindle her interest and passion for playing the guitar. She is now churning out monthly fingerstyle guitar song covers that has Aureus Academy and the people of YouTube going wow!
Onwards and Upwards
Vera is currently a guitar student at Aureus Academy under Teacher Elmer, who describes Vera as someone with the “natural gift of music as she is able to portray musical elements with great articulation such as rhythm, melody, dynamics, and tempo.” For a guitar student, at the tender age of 13, to excel in fingerstyle guitar is extremely hard to find, however Vera is not looking to settle and is “determined to get better.”
Wise beyond her years and eloquent in her words, Vera said that “there’s always something more and exciting to learn: a new song/piece, a new technique, or even the realisation that music just makes life better.” Vera’s goal and focus now is to be a well-rounded guitarist by exploring other genres such as Classical and Rock with Teacher Elmer at Aureus Academy.
Fueled By Family, Passion and Determination
When asked what she wants to be when she grows up, Vera chuckled and said “Maybe [she‘ll] be a guitar teacher. [She’s] not really sure yet.” At an age where school and extracurricular tuitions and activities can take up the priority of her time, Vera makes sure she “[practices] almost everyday [whenever she] can” by putting in at least a 15-minute practice session. All the practice has surely paid off as she was recently accepted into the Music Elective Programme (MEP), a 4-year programme designed for musically-inclined students. The MEP curriculum aims to develop students as practitioners, scholars, advocates and leaders in music and the arts.
On top of Vera’s sheer passion and determination to put in the practice to improve on the guitar, one constant positive driving force is her family’s love and support for her musical journey. “Nothing is as important as passion. No matter what you want to do with your life, be passionate.” This quote by Jon Bon Jovi rings true, especially for Vera and we are sure to see her passion continue to burn fervently in Singapore’s music and performing arts scene.
With passion, practice and a little motivation like Vera, YOU can be our next Aureus Young Artist of the Month! Watch our interview with Vera now and support her musical journey by subscribing to her YouTube channel!
Jacklyn is a Copywriter with Aureus Group, and making words flow to the sound of music is just about her thing! She hopes that her writing will be able to influence more people into experiencing the magic that music can bring. When Jacklyn is not crafting quirky and fun paragraphs or one-liners for work, she will be scrolling and swiping around for the next social media trend, singing for her neighbours from her living room, binging on Netflix or deep diving into the world of music and performing arts.
