In today’s modern and highly competitive world, there is no doubt that extracurricular activities such as sports and music have been core topics of discussion amongst parents and family members at the dinner table. We all know the importance of playing a sport and engaging in various physical activities. Being physically active keeps us fit and healthy, regardless of how old we are, but what about the benefits of playing a musical instrument? There is tons of scientific evidence that proves that children who learn music show enhanced brain function, have enhanced speech and linguistic development, higher Math skills, better memory, attention, and concentration, increased coordination and fine motor skills, as well as lifelong perseverance and discipline. Children who learn music also have improved social skills as they get to meet and interact with other children who engage in musical activities such as choir, band, and orchestra. With the growing popularity and interest in learning music, this article serves to provide a guide for parents on the various types of music classes for kids that are available, particularly at Singapore’s leading music school, Aureus Academy, Singapore.
First, many parents love to bring the joy of music to their children from as young as two and a half years old, but are not sure of how to begin, where to look for lessons, and what to do. Because of that, Aureus Academy has a special music class for kids from two and a half to four years of age. The Music Exploration (ME) course is designed specifically for this age group to expose them to various musical instruments and sounds to instill a passion for and interest in music-making. Our ME teachers are trained and highly-skilled at working with children of this tender age and strive to create an exciting and enjoyable time for the child and parent while learning and introducing basic musical concepts. This 30-minute one-to-one class generally runs for about six to eight months and serves as a preparatory course for students before moving on to lessons on a specific instrument. Throughout the ME course, students will be engaged in various fun-filled activities such as singing, dancing, clapping, playing music games. The child will also play on several pitched and non-pitched percussion instruments to impart a strong sense of rhythm and pitch, as well as recognizing the various timbres of each instrument from the earliest stages of music learning. From these lessons, the teacher will assess the child’s musical abilities and growth, and cater the lessons to suit the child’s natural ability and liking for a specific instrument, be it the piano, drums, or voice. Upon completion of this course, students will advance to music lessons on an instrument recommended by the ME teacher.
Next, we offer music classes for kids on many different instruments such as piano, violin, guitar, ukulele, drums, voice, cello, flute, and clarinet. Lessons are also private in a one-on-one setting. We firmly believe that this environment is the most ideal for teachers to assess and to give each child and student their fullest attention and cater to each individual’s personality and learning modality. Students will also learn faster and show more progress quicker when they learn in a personalized environment as teachers are able to devise their lesson plans and provide each student with the necessary instruction to help them achieve their goals, whatever they may be. Lessons at Aureus Academy also vary in time. The recommended duration of music classes for kids is typically 30 minutes with one lesson per week. Older students (seven and above) may begin with 45-minute lessons depending on their maturity, and attention span. Speaking from experience as a piano, flute, and Music Exploration teacher myself, most of my seven year old students begin with 45-minute lessons straight away as they are capable of handling more material, and have a longer attention span compared to a four or five year old child. We will also have more time in the lesson to work on music theory in a 45-minute lesson. Students may also sign up for 60-minute lessons upon recommendation of the teacher.
While parents are free to choose which instruments they want their child to take lessons on, we highly recommend young children from the age of four to begin with piano lessons. The piano is a very friendly and approachable instrument especially for young children simply because it is extremely easy to make sounds on the piano and sitting at the piano is just the same as sitting at the dinner table — up tall. Next, have the child put their fingers on the keys, down they go, and voila, a sound! The piano is also a fantastic instrument to start with because music theory is often paired with lessons. Having gone through two degrees (Bachelor’s and Master’s) and many years of piano and theory lessons myself, I can attest to the argument that the combination of piano and music theory is the most effective for students to excel and succeed in their music studies and to be an all-rounded musician. Students who learn piano along with music theory also have added advantages especially when learning more complex concepts such as chords and harmony because they are able to apply them directly to their piano playing. Some students may also want to explore and experiment with another instrument besides the piano, and that is completely fine! However, if they begin with piano and switch to another instrument, they would have already built a solid foundation in music and theoretical understanding, which will also boost their confidence and speed up the process of learning a new instrument.
At Aureus, we encourage our students to learn music for the joy of learning and making music. As such, several of our centers are equipped with a recital hall and a grand piano. It is our goal to redefine music education in Singapore and providing an avenue for students to perform in a recital setting is one of the many highlights of learning music at Aureus. Teachers organize recitals at least twice a year to give students the opportunity to share their hard work with their parents, family, and friends. We strive to make these recitals a positive learning experience and for students to hone their performance skills and to gain the invaluable experience of performing on stage from an early age.
