A lot of parents often ask when is the ideal age to start piano lessons for beginners. There are many factors to consider but kids can start piano lessons as young as 3.5 to 4 years old. According to my experience, children at this age generally have the ability to talk so that they can answer teacher’s questions. Interacting in class is a key to make the lesson more lively. Moreover, children in this age group could recognize some basic musical knowledge,
for example, letter names, musical symbols like treble clef and bass clef; They could also learn different rhythmic patterns, recognizing high and low register on the piano and even dynamics changes follow by teacher’s instructions.
There are many researches showing that it is better for kids to start learning instruments as soon as possible. I am sure many of you have heard “The Mozart Effect” at some points. According to Dr. Gottfried Schlaug, a Harvard University neurologist, learning to make music engages and demands coordination among many brain regions, including those that process sights, sounds, emotions and memories. As soon as they started piano lessons, the better effect to develop their brain, musical sense, and hand muscles.
Besides age problem, the kid’s interest in music is a key to success. Piano lessons for beginners at Aureus Academy could be fun. Not only included learning to play the piano but also singing, ear training, etc.
Have a qualified teacher is one the most important things to start piano lessons for beginners. Starting your musical journey with a good teacher is important because a good foundation could help your techniques develop easier for more difficult musical pieces later at advanced levels. Imagine your kids know nothing about piano, the first information they receive about the piano is extremely important because all of it has to be accurate. I have seen a lot of students did not receive professional piano training at their younger age, their hand muscles are weak as a result became harder to afford many technical demanded phrases like running notes in a faster tempo, change of tonal colors etc. Flat fingers are commonly seen on students who did not build up their piano techniques properly. If you already built up bad
habits, it is more likely for you to spend extra more time to get rid of those. Therefore, me as a piano major graduate, I highly recommend pick a qualitied teacher for piano lessons for beginners.
