Just signed up piano lessons for your child at Aureus Academy?
Got absolutely no idea what to do when the piano teacher says “Don’t forget to practice!”?
As a parent, what can you do to help them practice at home?
Are you unsure how long a practice session should last?
What should piano practice even entail?
I have had over 10 years of experience teaching piano to children of all ages, and part of ensuring by a teachers ask kids to practice because practicing at home is an important part of the learning process! It allows children to absorb what they have learnt in their piano lessons and gives them a chance to apply themselves.
Over the years I’ve come to realise that young beginner piano students flourish with a regular practice schedule, parental presence, and a syllabus to follow. In this blog post, I hope to provide some tips on how to structure piano practice for young beginners. I understand as parents, being time poor is a real thing. But the pay off between spending some time and no time guiding them at the start is significant.
Don’t fret! Parents do not have to spend a large amount of time with your kids during their practice in order to really help boost the rate of their progress. How much time?
15 minutes sessions every other day and slowly building up from there. Setting up a good foundation in those 15 minutes at the start is key.
Be generous with your praise when they do something right, no matter how small
This can encourage them to cultivate good practice habits eventually on their own.
During the practice sessions at home, parents should sit next to their child and use a pencil to pinpoint note by note exactly where they are playing up to on the exercise in the book. Make sure to not cover any of the book with your hand, but only have the pencil in their line of sight. I encourage this because it allows the child to not only see exactly where they’re up to, but also see further ahead in the exercise to mentally prepare note distancing, repetitive shapes and see the piece as a whole.
A good thing to remember is that if the notes on the page go downwards in direction then the direction you’re going on the piano is towards the left. If the notes on the page go upwards in direction then you’re going towards the right on the piano. It is important to remind them to help understand the concept of pitch direction. As a child improves and reaches an intermediate stage, parents can start implementing longer practice sessions at home – ideally on a daily basis. As they progress, parents can slowly give them more independence and no longer need to always be there during their practice sessions. If you feel you can’t help with home practice without a musical background, not to worry – at Aureus, you are absolutely welcome to sit into your child’s piano lessons.
At Aureus Academy another one of our many amazing features is the live stream service for all our lessons – not something you see in any other music school! If you’re at work or needed somewhere else during the day, but can set aside that extra time during your child’s allocated piano lesson, join in on the live stream to develop a better understanding of the foundation of music. I’ve worked in a variety of different music school environments (primary schools, high schools, music tuition centres, and private tuition moving that all online with covid-19) before finding my home at Aureus.
They are innovative – always about moving forward with technology at the highest level, recognising the potential in every student, and providing the best curriculum and syllabus to cater to each student’s individual learning style.
There are many reasons why Aureus Academy is Singapore’s fastest growing music school and what I’ve listed above is only a small snippet of what we offer in our 20+ branches all around Singapore and Hong Kong. So, what are you waiting for!? Book a free trial now at a branch near you.
