“When is the right time to have drum lessons for kids?” This question is one of the most commonly asked by parents. I personally think that there is no right or wrong age to have drum lessons for kids.
Ideally, the best age to start music lessons for children is generally between the ages of 5 and 7, as this is the age where most students gain the mental focus needed to learn an instrument. However, there are always exceptions as to how interested the child is towards learning an instrument, especially the drums!
As a drum teacher with Aureus Academy, Singapore’s leading music school for children, I do have students who have started playing the drums as young as the age of 3. You would be surprised as to how capable they are at coordinating their limbs, following instructions and even reading the basic notations. Your child is never too young to give drumming a try!
Benefits of Drumming
There are loads of benefits when it comes to drum lessons for kids. It helps to reduce stress and also acts as a therapeutic tool. While drumming, children strengthen their ability to focus, working on impulse control and decision-making skills. Drumming develops confidence as the student must learn to play dynamically loud, soft and the act of playing a loud beat takes self-confidence.
Playing the drums requires and trains the coordination of both fine and gross motor skills and listening ability. It also allows self-expression as playing the drums can help get in touch with their emotional state. Drumming helps us connect to our core, enhances our sense of empowerment and stimulates our creative expression. Nothing gets your adrenaline flowing like playing the drums, it is a great way to break a sweat while having a lot of fun!
How Lessons Are Carried Out
Music lessons for children are customized to the needs and learning abilities of the students, teachers at Aureus Academy have different lesson activities and musical knowledge to best engage the young students.
Drumming is a physically demanding instrument as it requires the students to use all their limbs. Teachers would normally start off with some warm-up exercises on the drums to get the muscles to loosen up. Once that is done, we would proceed with teaching the basic rudiments of music theory that covers drum notations, notes and rests values, music signs, tempo and dynamic indication. Students will learn coordination skills while learning stick control exercises. Drum lessons for kids also include sight reading of drum pieces, ear training on the drum pitches and also increasing their knowledge of different drum grooves that can be applied in their favorite songs!
