Alright, you’ve got your new guitar and now you want to play a couple of easy melodies. Here are some easy to play melodies we would like to share with you! We examine 4 popular pieces that can be learned quickly and with surprising ease!
Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
This song is absolutely perfect for beginners because it’s melody can be played on one string! Everyone knows Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star so even if you consider yourself an absolute beginner at music, you should be able to recognise this melody!
Ode To Joy
Now that we are comfortable playing on one string, let’s add a few more into the mix. Whereas Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star was played with one finger (although you could play it with more), Ode To Joy will utilise both the index finger and the ring finger. It’s a very recognisable melody and quite easy to play, because it is in the first position.
Perhaps the most well known tune in the world, this familiar ditty is a great piece to learn on the guitar. On the guitar it’s great to know because it is a short piece and reaps instant dividends. It has some interesting leaps, which will be good to train you to jump intervals later than the usual 2nds and 3rds.
Seven Nation Army
This song is a classic modern rock song that has an infectious riff and driving rhythm. The riff is easily played with one finger on the 5th string so it’s great for beginners who want to play something substantial without too much effort. When you feel comfortable playing the melody with 1 finger, perhaps you can make the piece more difficult by playing each note with a power chord, especially at the chorus! Another good thing about this piece is you can also play it along with the track once you get fast enough.
Guitar Tablature is ubiquitous today among guitar students because it lends itself so easily to the fret board. That being said, you should definitely learn to read standard music notation as well and learn to play both kinds of notation!
